Shimna's List expands the fiddle/guitar duo recorded on Shimna's EP into a 4-piece band, with the addition of flute and percussion, and returned to the Auckland Folk Festival in 2017 for two concert performances, including opening for the high energy Celitic Rave band Four Winds for late night revellers. Videos from the daytime concert are shown below. (Nobody was in a fit state to record the late one.)
There's no shortage of high-energy dance music in the form of jigs and reels from Ireland, Scotland and Cape Breton, as Shimna channels the playing styles of her favourite fiddlers, Liz Carroll, Kevin Burke, Eileen Ivers and Martin Hayes, backed by the authentic Irish rhythm section of DADGAD guitar and bodhran.
With Chabb in the band, fiddle and flute duets make the music soar to new heights.
And between the dance tunes, Shimna sings an eclectic set of folk, rock and pop favourites, including songs by New Zealand artists, Scottish living legend Dougie MacLean, songs composed by Bob Dylan, Prince and Dolly Parton, recorded by Sinead O'Connor, Amy Winehouse, Miley Cyrus, Hayley Westenra, Christie Moore, the Dixie Chicks and Adele, plus a taste of Irish rock from The Cranberries, folk-rock from Steeleye Span and some cheesy hits from the Eighties played in ways you've never imagined.
Just the thing for an Irish themed evening, especially if you've heard enough of the usual over-worked songs from St Patricks Day. We promise, no Galway Girl, Wild Rover or Dirty Old Town. Just for a change.
These are from the 2017 Auckland Folk Festival, to show the kind of thing you can expect from a Shimna's List performance.
